The first human in space didn't land inside his spacecraft

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth once aboard Vostok 1, becoming the first human in space. Because the capsule's landing system wasn't considered safe for a crewed touchdown, Gagarin ejected and parachuted down separately from his spacecraft near a village in Russia. His 108-minute flight opened the era of human spaceflight and made him an instant global celebrity.
