A private hunting club's neglected dam killed over 2,200 people

Wealthy industrialists, including Andrew Carnegie, belonged to an exclusive club that owned a modified dam above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, holding back a private fishing lake. After years of poor maintenance, the dam collapsed in May 1889, sending a wall of water through the town below. No one was ever held legally liable.
