The last pitched battle fought on British soil lasted less than an hour
On 16 April 1746, government troops under the Duke of Cumberland crushed Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite army near Inverness in under an hour, ending the last serious attempt to restore the Stuart line to the British throne. Troops then hunted survivors across the Highlands and banned clan dress and weapons, deliberately dismantling the clan system that had backed the rising. Culloden remains the last pitched battle fought on British soil.
