An all-female Soviet air regiment bombed German lines in planes made of plywood
The Soviet 588th Night Bomber Regiment was staffed entirely by women, flying obsolete Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes on night raids against German positions. The planes were so slow that pursuing fighters often stalled trying to match speed, and crews would cut their engines near the target to glide in silently before dropping bombs. German troops nicknamed them the 'Nachthexen' — Night Witches — and the regiment became one of the most decorated in the Soviet air force.
