A solar storm in 1859 set telegraph lines on fire
The largest geomagnetic storm on record struck Earth in September 1859, after astronomer Richard Carrington observed an enormous solar flare. Telegraph systems across Europe and North America sparked and shocked their operators, and some kept transmitting messages for hours after being disconnected from their power supplies. Aurorae were seen near the equator.
