Trapped under ice all winter with no access to air, painted turtles switch almost entirely to anaerobic metabolism, a process that would poison most animals with lactic acid within hours. Their shell and skeleton absorb the excess acid directly, buffering their blood chemistry for months. Some populations survive over 100 days at near-freezing temperatures without taking a single breath.
