K2 is shorter than Everest but kills a far greater share of climbers who attempt it

At 8,611 metres, K2 is the world's second-highest peak, yet its notoriously steep, technical routes and exposure to avalanches and sudden storms earned it the nickname 'the Savage Mountain.' For decades roughly one in four people who reached its summit died on the mountain, a fatality rate far higher than Everest's, even though K2 stands over 200 metres lower.
