On April 12, 1934, observers atop Mount Washington clocked a gust of 231 mph (372 km/h) — the highest surface wind speed ever recorded by a person, not counting tornadoes. The record stood until 1996, when an automated station on Barrow Island, Australia measured 253 mph during Tropical Cyclone Olivia. Mount Washington's collision of storm tracks still earns it a reputation for the world's worst weather.
