For most of the 20th century, as glaciers worldwide shrank under a warming climate, Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier stayed remarkably put, its towering ice front advancing about as fast as it calved into the lake below. It became one of the world's few genuinely stable glaciers and a major tourist draw — though recent surveys show even it has begun thinning and retreating.
