One plateau stores so much ice, scientists call it the planet's 'Third Pole'

The Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountains hold the largest volume of glacial ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic, earning it the nickname the Third Pole. Meltwater and glacier-fed rivers originating there — including the Yangtze, Mekong, Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra — supply fresh water to nearly two billion people downstream across Asia.
