This crab grows its own food garden on its hairy arms, next to boiling-hot vents

The yeti crab, discovered near hydrothermal vents in 2005, waves its bristly, bacteria-covered claws through mineral-rich water to cultivate the bacteria it then eats, essentially farming its own food on its own limbs. It lives in total darkness at depths where the only energy source is chemicals seeping from the Earth's crust, not sunlight.

— Enrique Macpherson, William Jones, Michel Segonzac, A new species of Kiwa (Decapoda: Anomura) from East Pacific hydrothermal vents — Zoosystema, 2005
