This desert plant grows only two leaves — for up to 1,500 years
Welwitschia mirabilis, found only in Namibia's Namib Desert, sprouts exactly two leaves as a seedling and never grows more — they just split and fray with age. Some individuals are estimated at 1,000-2,000 years old, sustained by a deep taproot and leaves that condense fog. Its Afrikaans name means 'two leaves that cannot die'.
