The colossal squid's eyes are the size of dinner plates — biggest in the animal kingdom

A colossal squid's eyes can reach nearly 27 centimetres across, built to catch the faintest traces of light or bioluminescent flashes in the deep ocean where it hunts. Scientists think the huge eyes help it spot the silhouette of one of its main predators, sperm whales, from far enough away to escape. Much of what we know still comes from just a handful of specimens ever recovered.
