One Pacific nation of 300,000 people speaks over 100 languages
Vanuatu has the highest density of languages per capita of any country on Earth, with more than 100 distinct indigenous languages spoken across its roughly 80 islands. Villages just a few kilometres apart can have mutually unintelligible tongues, a legacy of extreme isolation between islands. Bislama, alongside English and French, serves as a lingua franca to bridge the gap.
