Strawson said the free will debate misses what blame is actually for
In his 1962 essay 'Freedom and Resentment', P. F. Strawson argued our practices of blame, gratitude, and resentment aren't propped up by a belief in libertarian free will -- they're just part of caring how people treat you. Even if determinism turned out true, he said, we couldn't simply switch off these 'reactive attitudes', and we wouldn't want to. A world with no resentment or gratitude wouldn't be free of illusion -- it would be missing something human.
