Every continent on Earth used to be one single landmass

Around 335 to 175 million years ago, nearly all of Earth's land was fused into a single supercontinent geologists call Pangaea, surrounded by one vast ocean. Alfred Wegener's 1912 continental drift theory first proposed something like it, based on how Africa and South America's coastlines fit together like puzzle pieces, with matching fossils on both. Pangaea then split apart into the continents we recognise today — a process that continues, slowly, right now.
