Snow sits on Africa's tallest mountain almost exactly on the equator

Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres above sea level in Tanzania, close enough to the equator that its base is tropical while its summit stays cold enough for glaciers. It's the tallest freestanding mountain in the world — not part of any mountain range — and one of the Seven Summits climbed without technical mountaineering skill. Its ice fields have shrunk dramatically over the past century and are widely projected to disappear within decades.
