Shown four identical stockings, people still swore one felt softer

In a classic experiment, shoppers picked a 'best' pair from four identical stockings, and most chose the rightmost one — a known position bias. Asked why, almost no one mentioned position; they invented reasons about texture or sheen instead. Nisbett and Wilson argued we often have no real introspective access to why we did something, only a plausible story built after the fact.
