A shifted briefcase and a change of room saved Hitler from a bomb
On 20 July 1944, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg left a briefcase bomb at Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters, then slipped out to await the blast. Another officer had nudged the case behind a thick table leg to see a map better, and the meeting had just been moved to a wooden hut instead of the usual concrete bunker. Hitler survived; the conspirators and thousands of suspected sympathizers were executed within months.
