The 1916 Battle of Verdun lasted nearly ten months and produced roughly 700,000 casualties for barely any change in the front line. France rotated so many divisions through the meat grinder — kept fed by a single supply road nicknamed the "sacred way" — that a majority of the entire French army eventually served there.
