Caesar was warned to beware the Ides of March, and walked into the Senate anyway
On 15 March 44 BC, around 60 Roman senators led by Brutus and Cassius stabbed Julius Caesar to death in a meeting hall attached to Pompey's Theatre, hoping to save the Republic from one-man rule. It backfired completely: the murder triggered over a decade of civil war that ended with Caesar's adopted heir, Octavian, becoming Rome's first emperor.
