In the Iowa Gambling Task, players draw cards from four decks, some far riskier than others. Patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex kept drawing from the bad decks even after they could explain which ones were risky, while healthy players' palms started sweating -- and they began avoiding those decks -- before they could say why.
