A silent patient nicknamed 'Tan' proved language lives in one spot in the brain
In 1861, surgeon Paul Broca examined a patient who understood language but could only say the syllable 'tan.' An autopsy after his death found damage concentrated in one region of the left frontal lobe -- the first solid evidence that specific mental functions map onto specific brain locations, not the brain as an undifferentiated whole.
