Canada and Denmark 'fought' over an island for 50 years — with whisky, not weapons

From 1973, Canadian and Danish teams took turns raising their flag on tiny Hans Island, between Ellesmere Island and Greenland, each leaving a bottle of whisky or schnapps for the other. No shots were ever fired in the 'Whisky War.' In 2022 the two countries finally signed a treaty splitting the island along its natural ridge, giving Canada its first land border with a European nation, via Greenland.
