A Yukon river vanished almost overnight when a glacier changed course

In just four days in May 2016, Yukon's Slims River lost nearly all its flow after the retreating Kaskawulsh Glacier rerouted its meltwater into a neighboring valley. Water that had run north to the Bering Sea for millennia now runs south to the Pacific instead. Scientists call it the first case of 'river piracy' ever documented as it happened, and traced the glacier's retreat to industrial-era warming.
