Earth has an eighth continent, and 94% of it is underwater
Zealandia is a nearly 5-million-km² landmass that rifted away from Gondwana around 80 million years ago and gradually sank beneath the South Pacific. Geologists formally classified it as Earth's eighth continent in 2017 — only New Zealand, New Caledonia, and a scatter of islands still break the surface.
