An octopus was filmed carrying coconut shells across the seafloor to use as portable armor

Marine biologists filmed veined octopuses off Indonesia collecting halved coconut shells, stacking them together, and awkwardly carrying them across open sand while walking on two arms, only to reassemble the shells into a hiding shelter later. Because the octopuses carried the shells before they had any immediate use for them, the behavior was classified as tool use, one of the clearest examples ever documented in an invertebrate.
