The vampire squid doesn't drink blood, and fires glowing decoys instead of ink

Despite its name, the vampire squid feeds passively on falling detritus called marine snow, caught with a sticky filament it trails through the deep ocean. Living in waters with almost no oxygen and no light, it long ago lost the ink sac most squid rely on for defense, and instead ejects sticky, bioluminescent mucus clouds to startle predators. It's the last surviving member of an entire order of cephalopods, Vampyromorphida, that otherwise died out millions of years ago.
