This marsupial eats up to 20,000 termites in a single day

The numbat is one of the only mammals active purely in daylight and almost the only one that eats nothing but termites, tracking them by scent and flicking them up with a tongue over 10cm long. Once spread across most of southern Australia, it now survives mainly in a few protected pockets of Western Australia after foxes and cats devastated its numbers.

— Tony Friend and Jeff Short, The Numbat: A Historical Review of the Discovery, Biology and Management of Myrmecobius fasciatus — CALMScience Supplement, 1994
