One wireless operator, minutes from bed, helped save 705 lives from the Titanic

When the Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, its distress calls were picked up by Harold Cottam, the wireless operator on the RMS Carpathia, who happened to still be listening as he prepared to turn in. The Carpathia changed course immediately and steamed for over three hours through ice fields, arriving in time to rescue 705 survivors from the lifeboats.
