An entire English colony vanished, leaving only one carved word behind
In 1587, over 100 English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina. When their governor returned from a supply trip to England in 1590, delayed by war, the colony was gone — no bodies, no signs of battle, just the word "CROATOAN" carved into a post. Their fate has never been conclusively solved.
