A prison holding seven inmates became the spark of the French Revolution

On 14 July 1789, Parisian crowds stormed the Bastille fortress, mainly hunting for the gunpowder stored inside, and freed the seven prisoners it actually held. The building was a nearly empty symbol of royal power rather than a strategic target, but its fall became the defining image of the French Revolution. France still marks the date as its national holiday, Bastille Day.
