A star-nosed mole's nose bears 22 fleshy tentacles packed with over 25,000 touch receptors, more sensory input than a human hand. It can touch, identify, and swallow a single prey item in as little as 120 milliseconds, the fastest reaction time recorded in any mammal. Neuroscientist Kenneth Catania found the star's smallest, central appendages do most of the identifying, like a high-speed braille reader.
