One of the only venomous mammals on Earth looks like an oversized shrew
The solenodon, a rare nocturnal mammal found only in Cuba and Hispaniola, delivers venom through grooved channels in its lower incisors, a trait almost unheard of among mammals and shared with only a handful of other species worldwide. Solenodons have survived largely unchanged since before the extinction of the dinosaurs, and their populations are now so fragmented and scarce that for decades some researchers feared the animals had gone extinct entirely.
