Weil called attention the rarest form of generosity

Simone Weil argued that truly paying attention to another person — setting your own thoughts aside to see their suffering as it actually is — is close to a moral and even spiritual act. Most of what passes for kindness, she thought, is really just impatience to act, dressed up.
