Paying people to do what they already loved doing can kill their motivation for it

Edward Deci and Richard Ryan's self-determination theory argues that lasting motivation depends on three needs being met: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. External rewards that undermine a sense of choice, like paying someone for a hobby, can crowd out the intrinsic motivation that was driving the behaviour in the first place, leaving people less interested once the reward stops.
