Hostages who defended their captors gave psychology a new name

During a six-day bank robbery and hostage siege at Norrmalmstorg in Stockholm in August 1973, the hostages resisted rescue and later publicly defended their captors. Criminologist Nils Bejerot coined 'Stockholm syndrome' to describe the bond, though it has never been formally recognised as a psychiatric diagnosis.
