An island on maps for over a century was proven not to exist by sailing through it
'Sandy Island,' charted near New Caledonia as far back as an 1870s whaling log, kept being copied onto nautical charts, scientific maps, and digital map databases for more than 120 years. In 2012, Australian researchers aboard the RV Southern Surveyor sailed straight through its supposed location and found only 1,400 metres of open ocean, prompting map publishers to finally erase it.
