Arctic reindeer eyes turn blue for winter, then gold again in summer

The reflective layer behind a reindeer's retina, the tapetum lucidum, changes colour with the seasons. In summer's near-endless light it stays gold, but as the Arctic winter brings months of darkness it shifts to blue, scattering more light and boosting sensitivity so reindeer can still spot wolves and find lichen under the snow.
