Pangolins are armored in overlapping scales made of keratin — the same protein as human fingernails and rhino horn — and when threatened, they roll into a tight ball that even lions struggle to bite into. That armor doesn't protect them from humans: pangolins are among the most trafficked mammals on Earth.
