Across New Guinea's forests, male birds-of-paradise have evolved some of the most extravagant courtship displays in nature — flattening feathers into perfect ovals, flipping upside down, or forming shapeshifting neon patterns — purely to be chosen by famously unimpressed females. Charles Darwin cited them as a clean example of sexual selection working independently of survival advantage.
