Oymyakon, home to a few hundred people in Russia's Sakha Republic, has recorded temperatures as low as -67.7C (-90F) — the lowest ever measured in a permanently inhabited settlement. Winters average around -50C, cold enough that residents keep car engines running for days and outhouses replace indoor plumbing, since buried pipes would freeze solid.
