This nocturnal bird echolocates like a bat to fly through pitch-black caves
The oilbird is one of the only birds known to echolocate, firing rapid clicks — up to 250 a second — to navigate its breeding caves in total darkness. Unlike bat calls, its clicks sit low enough in pitch for human ears to hear. Outside the cave it hunts fruit by sight and smell, saving sonar for where light never reaches.
