For the first time, individuals stood trial for waging war itself
Between 1945 and 1946, an international tribunal at Nuremberg tried 24 senior Nazi officials, establishing that "following orders" was no defense against charges of crimes against humanity. Twelve defendants were sentenced to death. It was the first time political and military leaders faced international prosecution for war crimes, setting a precedent used by later international courts.
