A break-in at a hotel complex ended a US presidency
In June 1972, burglars linked to Nixon's re-election campaign were caught planting bugs in the Democratic Party's offices at the Watergate complex. Washington Post reporters Woodward and Bernstein, aided by an anonymous source later revealed as FBI official Mark Felt, traced the cover-up back to the Oval Office. Facing near-certain impeachment, Nixon resigned in August 1974 — the only US president ever to do so.
