Nietzsche thought every living thing is driven by one basic force

Beneath hunger, sex, ambition and even self-preservation, Nietzsche argued there's a single deeper drive: the will to power, a basic striving to grow, assert and overcome resistance. He saw it operating everywhere from cell biology to empires, and treated the people who denied having it as simply disguising it as humility or virtue.
