Epicurus said the good life is mostly about not being afraid

Epicurus taught that the highest good wasn't pleasure-seeking but 'ataraxia' — a state of untroubled calm reached by stripping away needless fears, especially the fear of death and of angry gods. Strip those away, he argued, and a simple life of modest food, friendship and freedom from pain is already about as good as life gets.
