Orwell invented a language designed to make certain thoughts impossible

In Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell's fictional 'Newspeak' deliberately shrinks vocabulary and grammar so that politically forbidden ideas — 'thoughtcrime' — become literally impossible to express, and eventually unthinkable. Invented words like 'goodthink' and 'duckspeak' show the mechanism in miniature. Most linguists consider the premise an exaggeration of real effects, but Newspeak remains the standard fictional case study whenever language-and-thought debates come up.
