Marie Curie personally drove X-ray vans to WWI battlefields

In 1914, Marie Curie realized soldiers were dying from wounds that a quick X-ray could have located. She raised funds, fitted cars with X-ray equipment and generators, and trained young women to operate them near the front lines. These 'petites Curies' are estimated to have X-rayed over a million wounded soldiers during the war.
