Biologist Lynn Margulis revived and rigorously defended the idea, widely dismissed at the time, that mitochondria and chloroplasts descend from independent bacteria engulfed by a larger host cell over a billion years ago. Her 1967 paper was reportedly rejected by about fifteen journals before publication; genetic evidence later confirmed the theory decisively.
